Carbon Calculation and Mitigation – SPOC Forum

This SPOC Forum had short presentations from Heart of the City and from two of our member companies, exploring and sharing experiences on calculating CO2 emissions.

“Heart of the City”, introduced by Andy Melia (CEO) and Katie Rogers, talked about the methodology behind counting carbon emissions for small organisations, the drawbacks and compromises needed and the online calculators that give some reliable standard measurements.

Stuart Mitchell, Livery member of WCIT, presented his bespoke but easy to use method for measuring travel and transport emissions, which he is happy to make available to other companies on request.

Keith Aldis and Kate Oldridge of the Tylers & Bricklayers described how they had commissioned an external audit with “We Are Isla”, to enable them to complete a benchmarking carbon survey at their Christmas Carol Service dinner.  The findings highlighted the most effective ways to reduce the carbon impact of the event, and the Company is now using that data to inform the content of their Climate Action Plan and intends to proceed with further carbon measurements of future events.

The Q&A facilitated by Gordon Masterton of the Engineers was very active, the norm for these events, and as the discussion developed, it became apparent that there was some variance in members’ interpretations of Scope 3 emissions with regard to travel and accommodation, potentially meriting some further research, and reasoned consideration and guidance by LCAG.

The event was a prime example of LCAG’s working principles in action – sharing, discussing and learning.

The event is available to view on our YouTube Channel here.
