Birkbeck University will be hosting a joint event with the City of London to discuss Climate Change and Sustainability. This event will take place in person on Wednesday 18 May 4.45pm-6.30pm. The event will be held on Birkbeck Campus.

Do laws and professions impede climate change actions?

Join the City of London Livery Climate Action Group, Worshipful Company of World Traders and FS Club together with Birkbeck, University of London for an evening of discussion.

This occasion will propose different perspectives on barriers to climate change. The speakers will put forward ideas about the legal, financial, human rights and environmental implications, as a basis for broader discussion with the audience.

Panel

  • Alderman Emma Edhem (Chair) – Law, policy and practices
  • Professor Stewart Motha – Law and Responsibility to Future Generations
  • Dr Karin Shields – Management Sustainability Reporting
  • Dr Simon Pooley – Climate Driving Wildfires and Bioinvasions

The panel will explore barriers imposed by the law and how regulations could be changed to support positive environmental action.

BIOGRAPHIES 

Professor Emma Edhem is Alderman for the Ward of Candlewick and is a Barrister at No5 Chambers.  Emma also sits on the Corporation’s Court of Aldermen, General Purposes Committee, Nominations Committee to the Court of Aldermen, Court of Common Council, Finance Committee, Efficiency and Performance sub committee for Finance, Bridge House Estates, Community and Children’s Committee, the City of London Police Authority Board, Economic and Cyber Crime Board, Professional Standard and Integrity of the City Police, and Tackling Racism Task Force.

Dr Karin Shields Lecturer in Accounting and Finance. Karin’s research interests are in the areas of international accounting, financial reporting quality, gender in accounting, sustainability accounting and corporate governance.

Professor Stewart Mutha former Dean of Law. He has written extensively on sovereignty, and postcolonial legal formations. This research informs his teaching in areas including constitutional law, human rights, and histories of political violence.

Dr Simon Pooley Lambert Lecturer in Environment. His research interests are interdisciplinary, ranging across geography, environmental humanities (history in particular), ethnozoology and conservation science.
