Alderman and Sheriff Alison Gowman introduces the Livery Climate Action Group and thanks everyone who has made it possible.

Little did I think that when I arranged a seminar for Livery Companies and members in January 2021 that the whole idea would snowball and result in a full blown Livery Climate Action Group. The interest and engagement at that first online event was tremendous and continued with the formation of a core group of active supporters. The impetus for this initiative was the City Corporation’s own Climate Action Strategy. The strategy was not only in respect of the Corporation’s own direct emissions but was a challenge to the Square Mile at large to become net zero by 2040. The Livery were clearly ready to take up that challenge.
The fact is that many Liveries were already looking at the issues of climate impact in relation to their investments, property or operation and professional trade or craft. The audience was ready to share their ideas and professional experience. For some Liveries this was already in their DNA and purpose, for others it has been more challenging. We can all learn from each other.
The first seminar led to two more about the sustainable development goals and food. Both of wide ranging importance and way beyond the scope of most Livery activities. However understanding the breadth of the issues can help us all find our own solutions. The questions around food are being taken forward by the Pan Livery Food Group.
What is also so positive about the work around climate is the collaboration that is taking place between Livery Companies. As well as the Food Group, Pollinating London Together has shown great leadership in the work on biodiversity and pollinators, supported by the Lady Mayoress, Hilary Russell.
The new website so generously supported by our founder Livery Company supporters will be a mine of information. We need to keep it relevant and dynamic with new content being added on a regular basis.
It is hoped that many more will contribute to the ideas and knowledge and share experience and useful tips. It will be a great way to celebrate COP26 and the future resilience of our Livery Companies and our City.
My heartfelt thanks to the long list of the people who have helped get us here. They are listed on the website and all deserve our loudest applause and thanks for all the work they have been doing and have committed to do in the future.
