SUMMARY:Webinar : Preparing for Combustion Transition: A framework for accelerating our transition to Net Zero
DESCRIPTION:Preparing for Combustion Transition: A framework for accelerating our transition to Net Zero Webinar \nPresented by Professor Simon Spooner\, Principal Scientist\, Atkins Infrastructure. \nAbout this Webinar\nWe have grown prosperous and numerous by burning and consuming the products of biological systems of the past and present. We have now learnt how to get what we need without having to do this anymore. We just have to get on and manage the transition to embracing and stewarding our world instead of consuming it. In this talk I will set out some concepts and principles for this\, some metrics to measure with and some plans and tools to help manage the transition. Then\, as Water Conservators and Livery Companies\, what might we be able to contribute here in the City? Can we develop alternative approaches to offsetting that will be more effective? Can the City lead in changing its infrastructure to eliminate combustion in our buildings and transport and so attain net zero? \nAbout the Speaker\nProf Simon Spooner is an environmental scientist applying scientific models combined with social\, economic\, political and regulatory methods to address the challenges that we face and help build better infrastructure systems. Currently his main activities are: as a senior expert advisor on the UK\nHealth Security Agency programme to develop wastewater epidemiology based responses to the Covid-19 pandemic; applying his SimBasinQ river basin water quality model to address the impact of wastewater discharges on our rivers; and developing nature based catchment solutions to flooding\,\nwater quality\, water resources\, biodiversity and carbon sequestration. He has developed the combustion transition framework\, an innovative approach to integrating GHG emissions reductions and land-use based regeneration of natural processes with a framework of metrics and economic\ntools to facilitate an accelerated transition to net-zero. \nOver the last 30 years as a consultant with Atkins and before that Mott MacDonald he worked about half his time overseas\, mostly in China\, on major World Bank\, EU and UK government projects in urban environment development\, energy systems and environmental policy. He was Technical Director for water and environment for Atkins in China mostly delivering urban planning projects. More recently he worked in partnership with KPMG for the UK FCDO in China on the development of environmental governance processes and access to international financing for infrastructure projects under China’s Belt and Road programme. In the UK he mostly worked for water companies in wastewater and river basin management and in water industry regulatory processes. \nHe is an honorary professor at Nottingham university in Ningbo and UK campuses and a visiting professor at many universities in China as well as Cambridge University in UK. He has written and edited a number of books on water and environmental management\, regulation and adaption of European approaches to China for OECD\, FWR\, EU and Chinese publishers. What he really enjoys is building on the latest science and digital systems to innovate and find simpler integrated solutions to complex problems. \nRegister for this event here: Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Day seminar: The Future of Energy in the UK
DESCRIPTION:Deputy Master\, Kenneth Cupitt in his responsibility as a member of the Education Committee has organised an all-day seminar on the topic “The Future of Energy” at Glaziers’ Hall\, with six speakers comprising business owners and decision makers will share their views on both the provision of energy for the country and what alternative choices may be available for future opportunities. \nInformation shared by the speakers will help business leaders make the right decisions over the next decade and learn what the UK Government\, and the supply industry\, is having to put in place for economic green energy. Topics will include: \n\nNuclear Energy (both Fusion and Fission will be covered and what Rolls Royce are developing with mini reactors for regional generation);\nMaking money from Sources of Energy (Ways of Cutting the Costs of Energy in a Business\, how to store energy in times of plenty for use in times of shortages\, achieving cost cutting by enabling businesses to trade energy);\nRooftop Solar Panels and PV Modules (advantages of using Solar Energy\, reduced Electricity Bill\, Return on Investment\, Renewable Energy\, Environmentally Friendly\, Energy Independence). A photovoltaic system or solar power system is an electric power system designed to supply usable solar power by means of photovoltaics;\nAdding Hydrogen to Supplement Natural Gas (now that trials of the addition of hydrogen to gas have been completed what it will do to benefit us all);\nHydrogen as a Fuel for Delivery Vehicles (there is unlikely to be enough Lithium to power storage batteries in the short term\, but larger vehicles are also likely to be powered by hydrogen to carry the bulky items and for the driving range);\nHeat Pump Technology (the conclusion\, thus far\, is that for heat pumps\, ammonia is thermodynamically the best refrigerant in the field of operation for comfort cooling and is also safer than using Fluorocarbons).

SUMMARY:Water Conservators’ Webinar 'Preparing For A Drier Future '
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to join the Water Conservators’ January Webinar ‘ Preparing For A Drier Future ‘. \nWednesday 18th January 2023 5.30pm to 6.45pm \nPresented by Jim Hall\, Professor of Climate and Environmental Risks at the University of Oxford\, and Jon Chappell\, Senior Policy Adviser at the National Infrastructure Commission. \nAbout this Webinar\nThe National Infrastructure Commission is the government’s independent expert adviser on long term infrastructure policy. Among its advisory remit is water\, flooding and drought. In 2018 the Commission published a seminal report on the latter\, which has informed water sector plans and government planning assumptions ever since. Preparing for a Drier Future called for that additional water supply and demand reduction totalling 4\,000Ml/day to be delivered by 2050 to ensure England avoids severe drought. This webinar will set out the triple track approach recommended by the Commission: addressing system leakages\, investing in new supply and transfer infrastructure and reducing consumption. Commission representatives will offer an update on progress towards their proposed solutions and touch on future plans for reports on water related topics. \nRegister to the free event here

SUMMARY:Responsible Offsetting Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Invitation to an online seminar taking place on Tuesday 29th November on the topical subject of Responsible Offsetting. \nThe guest speakers are Gavin Towers\, from the Fueller’s Company and Sam Ramsay. \nThis will be an opportunity to hear of best practices in the controversial field of carbon offsetting. Gavin and Sam will explain the principles of offsetting\, and how the good schemes work in practice\, as well as draw attention to the pitfalls and the less responsible schemes that we may have heard about. \nCan we really absolve our consciences for our emissions simply by paying someone to plant trees\, indefinitely? Or is there far more to offsetting than tree planning? \nIt will be presented in a Livery context and address the real issues faced by Companies as they tackle the issues of Climate Change and help them decide whether responsible offsetting could be part of their approach. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Net Zero Initiative Lectures from Prof Myles Allen
DESCRIPTION:Director of the Oxford Net Zero initiative\, Prof Myles Allen is hosting a series of lectures focused on Net Zero. \nProf Allen has published about human and natural influences on the climate\, contributing to climate changes and extreme weather risks. \n  \nHis next lecture within the series is on Tuesday 22nd November surrounding the topic of ‘The Atmospheric Physics Behind Net Zero’. \nBefore net zero\, climate policy was all about the contraction and convergence of emissions between rich and poor to achieve\, leading to “stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere” at a safe level. But scientists struggled to establish what that “safe” level was\, making little progress in over a quarter of a century. Prof Allen will explain the physics and probability theory within his lecture and the importance of this when striving for net zero. \n  \nGet a ticket here: The Atmospheric Physics Behind Net zero Tickets

SUMMARY:Rewilding And The Water Cycle- Presented by Dr Gemma Harvey
DESCRIPTION:About this Webinar \nAnimals and plants can have a profound influence on Earth surface processes and land forms across multiple scales\, with important implications for environmental resilience\, restoration and hazards. Such ‘ecosystem engineer’ species can generate potential for working with natural processes to restore degraded environments. For example\, reintroducing missing ecosystem engineers can enhance and accelerate environmental restoration\, potentially reducing the need for direct intervention and hence costs. While water resource management is increasingly emphasising the importance of working with natural ecosystem processes to deliver multiple environmental\, social and economic benefits\, prevailing approaches (e.g. Natural Flood Management) have tended to focus on strategic placement of measures in the landscape\, rather than whole-system restoration. Rewilding is a radical new conservation approach that is rapidly gaining momentum globally and has been advocated as a vital tool in reversing biodiversity decline. Rewilding involves restoring wildness to anthropogenically altered landscapes\, including the reintroduction of missing species. It is driving dramatic biodiversity gains\, but many of the wider ecosystem service benefits and their economic importance remains unquantified. This webinar will introduce key concepts associated with rewilding\, illustrate some of the types of landscape change and ecosystem engineering effects that rewilding facilitates\, and explore the relevance of this new approach for the water cycle and water resource management \nAbout the Speaker \n \nDr Gemma Harvey is a Reader in Physical Geography at Queen Mary University of London. Her research addresses key questions in biogeomorphology to inform sustainable environmental management\, including understanding system responses to disturbance (e.g. invasive non-native species) and to environmental restoration and rewilding. Gemma leads research quantifying the roles of plants and animals as ‘ecosystem engineers’ driving earth surface processes and exploring how these organisms can contribute to landscape restoration and delivery of ecosystem services. Her research is interdisciplinary\, involving collaborations with geomorphologists\, ecologists\, hydraulic modellers and environmental engineers. She conducts collaborative research with key organisations in the water and environment sector including Environment Agency\, National Trust\, Natural England\, the River Restoration Centre and Rewilding Britain. Current projects are exploring the potential for biodiversity changes delivered by landscape rewilding to modify hydrological processes and help mitigate floods and low flow stresses. \nShe is working with the pioneering Knepp Estate rewilding project in West Sussex to quantify vegetation regeneration and is leading a UKRI-funded project on ‘Biodiversity and the water cycle: can rewilding mitigate the impacts of hydrological extremes?’ \nGemma is Director of Education for postgraduate taught programmes at QMUL Geography and has led the MSc Water and Environmental Management programme since 2012\, supporting environmental scientists into careers in the water and environment sector. She has been Associate Editor for the Water and Life domain of Wiley journal WIREs Water since the journal was founded in 2014. \nRegister For This Webinar \nTo attend this webinar you will first need to register via the link below to Eventbrite. SUMMARY:Supply chains for Decarbonisation - Fuellers’ Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Worshipful Company of Fuellers is delighted to announce that the next Fuellers’ Conversation in Association with EY will take place on Thursday 17 February 2022. This will be held via Zoom and the meeting will open at 1800 ready for the start at 1815. \nThe Speaker will be D. Saradhi Rajan\, Managing Partner of Cybele Capital Partners LLP and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Fuellers. \nGovernments are radically reappraising their aspirations to strengthen commitment to climate action. The UK has taken bold steps towards a low-carbon economy through its Net Zero Strategy which will help achieve the goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050. However\, these plans and the promise of the transition will only come to fruition if it is backstopped by investment. The road ahead will require large volumes of capital\, which must be channelled into decarbonising major sectors of the economy: from energy\, to mobility\, and significant industrial processes such as auto manufacturing and steel production. \nA key barrier facing each of these sectors is securing a supply of critical minerals. With deep capital markets and significant metals trading infrastructure\, the UK’s financial and professional services ecosystem is already exploring solutions. Cybele Capital Partners is assisting this effort by investing in mining projects that will produce the critical minerals required to fuel the sustainable energy transition. \nFuellers’ Conversation in association with EY\nSpeaker: D. Saradhi Rajan\nTitle of talk: 'Supply chains for Decarbonisation'\nZoom Link: < CLICK HERE >\nThursday 17 February 2022 @ 1800 for 1815\nThere is no charge for this event\, however we invite delegates to make a suggested donation of £10 to the Fuellers’ Charitable Trust Fund (CLICK HERE) if they are able to.
