SUMMARY:Television for the Environment Charity Film Awards
DESCRIPTION:The Television for the Environment Charity was set up 39 years ago by the UN\, WWF\, and Central Television (ITV). As a charity\, they commission filmmakers across the globe to produce short films highlighting environmental and sustainability issues and offer possible solutions. \nIn 2020 one of the winning films from the awards\, ‘My Octopus Teacher‘ subsequently went on to win the BAFTA award and the Hollywood Oscar for best documentary. \nFor the first time in 11 years\, the Film awards are being hosted in the City of London at Merchant Taylors Hall. \nOut of 75 film entries\, they have shortlisted 17 and the winners will be announced Black-tie Gala Dinner on 29 November. DESCRIPTION:Director of the Oxford Net Zero initiative\, Prof Myles Allen is hosting a series of lectures focused on Net Zero. \nProf Allen has published about human and natural influences on the climate\, contributing to climate changes and extreme weather risks. \n  \nHis next lecture within the series is on Tuesday 22nd November surrounding the topic of ‘The Atmospheric Physics Behind Net Zero’. \nBefore net zero\, climate policy was all about the contraction and convergence of emissions between rich and poor to achieve\, leading to “stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere” at a safe level. But scientists struggled to establish what that “safe” level was\, making little progress in over a quarter of a century. DESCRIPTION:About this Webinar \nAnimals and plants can have a profound influence on Earth surface processes and land forms across multiple scales\, with important implications for environmental resilience\, restoration and hazards. Such ‘ecosystem engineer’ species can generate potential for working with natural processes to restore degraded environments. For example\, reintroducing missing ecosystem engineers can enhance and accelerate environmental restoration\, potentially reducing the need for direct intervention and hence costs. While water resource management is increasingly emphasising the importance of working with natural ecosystem processes to deliver multiple environmental\, social and economic benefits\, prevailing approaches (e.g. Natural Flood Management) have tended to focus on strategic placement of measures in the landscape\, rather than whole-system restoration. Rewilding is a radical new conservation approach that is rapidly gaining momentum globally and has been advocated as a vital tool in reversing biodiversity decline. Rewilding involves restoring wildness to anthropogenically altered landscapes\, including the reintroduction of missing species. It is driving dramatic biodiversity gains\, but many of the wider ecosystem service benefits and their economic importance remains unquantified. This webinar will introduce key concepts associated with rewilding\, illustrate some of the types of landscape change and ecosystem engineering effects that rewilding facilitates\, and explore the relevance of this new approach for the water cycle and water resource management \nAbout the Speaker \n \nDr Gemma Harvey is a Reader in Physical Geography at Queen Mary University of London. Her research addresses key questions in biogeomorphology to inform sustainable environmental management\, including understanding system responses to disturbance (e.g. invasive non-native species) and to environmental restoration and rewilding. Gemma leads research quantifying the roles of plants and animals as ‘ecosystem engineers’ driving earth surface processes and exploring how these organisms can contribute to landscape restoration and delivery of ecosystem services. Her research is interdisciplinary\, involving collaborations with geomorphologists\, ecologists\, hydraulic modellers and environmental engineers. She conducts collaborative research with key organisations in the water and environment sector including Environment Agency\, National Trust\, Natural England\, the River Restoration Centre and Rewilding Britain. Current projects are exploring the potential for biodiversity changes delivered by landscape rewilding to modify hydrological processes and help mitigate floods and low flow stresses. \nShe is working with the pioneering Knepp Estate rewilding project in West Sussex to quantify vegetation regeneration and is leading a UKRI-funded project on ‘Biodiversity and the water cycle: can rewilding mitigate the impacts of hydrological extremes?’ \nGemma is Director of Education for postgraduate taught programmes at QMUL Geography and has led the MSc Water and Environmental Management programme since 2012\, supporting environmental scientists into careers in the water and environment sector. The UK has taken bold steps towards a low-carbon economy through its Net Zero Strategy which will help achieve the goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050. However\, these plans and the promise of the transition will only come to fruition if it is backstopped by investment. The road ahead will require large volumes of capital\, which must be channelled into decarbonising major sectors of the economy: from energy\, to mobility\, and significant industrial processes such as auto manufacturing and steel production. \nA key barrier facing each of these sectors is securing a supply of critical minerals. With deep capital markets and significant metals trading infrastructure\, the UK’s financial and professional services ecosystem is already exploring solutions. Heather is primarily an ecologist and was a member of the Government Advisory Panel on Sustainable Development Education also known as the Holland Committee for its lifetime of 5 years\, and then as an advisor on the Secretary of State Sounding Board. Her research has mostly been concerned with the ecological history\, management and conservation of chalk grassland meadows. She is a Fellow of the Linnaean Society. Heather is now working as a consultant for a variety of organisations; is a Vice President of the Institution of Environmental Science\, a Past President of the Institute of Horticulture and until March 2017 was chairing the Science Council. Heather is the Master of the Court of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners. Heather was an expert with the Commission for Sustainable London 2012 and a Secretary of State Board member for the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. \n\nAlderman Alison Gowman  \n \nAlison is one of the two Sheriffs of the City of London taking office on September 28th 2021.  Her role at the Old Bailey is to support the Judges and to work with the Lord Mayor in his role of promoting the City at home and abroad. \nAlison has practised as a solicitor in the City of London all her working life specialising in commercial property at international law firm DLA Piper. She has focussed on development work and landlord and tenant matters as well as insolvency and waste management. This expertise along with her role as a Magistrate will help her enhance the importance of the Rule of Law whilst working closely with the Judges. \nAs a Director of the Green Finance Institute\, she promotes green finance with a particular engagement in Latin America. She is a leading member of the City Corporation’s work on private finance for COP26. Her environment and sustainability interests led her to bring together the Livery Companies to consider the Livery and the City’s response to the climate challenge under the banner of the Livery Climate Action Group. \nShe chairs the Active City Network\, a business network that encourages safe walking and cycling in the City to create healthy streets and promote wellbeing. She is also the Chair of London Road Safety Council.  She is a trustee of Trust for London\, an independent charitable foundation that aims to tackle poverty and inequality in London. \nShe was the first female partner at her firm and combined a senior partner role whilst representing the Ward of Dowgate first as a Common Councillor from 1991 – 2002 and thereafter as the Alderman of the Ward. Alison has served on most of the City’s committees and is currently a member of the Bridge House Estates Board (Chair of the grant making arm\, City Bridge Trust 2016 – 19)\, Investment and Capital Buildings Committees. She is a Governor of the Museum of London and Museum of London Archaeology. \n\nGordon Roy\, City of London Corporation \nGordon Roy is the District Surveyor and Environmental Resilience Director for the City of London Corporation. He is a key player in the implementation of climate resilience in the Square Mile through the City’s Climate Action Strategy. He is overseeing a number of Climate Resilience initiatives including a pioneering Riverside Strategy to prepare the City for sea level rise and a series of pilot projects that will test resilience measures in the City’s public realm. He is a Chartered Surveyor with over 30 years’ experience of the built environment through numerous Local Authority Building Control roles most recently as District Surveyor for the City Corporation \nProgramme \n13:00 – Welcome \n13:05 – Alderman Alison Gowman. \nAlderman Gowman will present the City’s ambition for a green and climate resilient Square Mile.
