SUMMARY:Small Modular Nuclear Reactors: Hope or Hype?
DESCRIPTION:Dr Mike Bluck\nDirector\, Centre for Nuclear Engineering\, Imperial College\nTuesday 28 May 2024\nNational Liberal Club\, 1 Whitehall Place\, London SW1A 2HE \nFuellers Advantage – A series of technical meetings\, held jointly by the Worshipful Company of Fuellers with the Science Circle of the National Liberal Club \nSUMMARY OF PRESENTATION\nThere is renewed global interest in nuclear power\, particularly as a result of energy security concerns arising as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are thought by many to be the answer to the challenges in the deployment of nuclear power. If successful they could play a key role in decarbonisation\, providing reliable low-carbon electricity and heat\, in support of intermittent renewables. There are more than 50 designs globally\, but all remain just that – designs. What are they\, when will we see them\, and will they be able to solve the nuclear industry’s problems? The UK has shortlisted six SMR designs\, and a competition is underway. In this talk I will summarise the technologies\, explain what ‘modular’ really means and what is needed from Government\, industry and finance to realise this potential?

SUMMARY:How Pollinator-Friendly is the City of London?
DESCRIPTION:Background: \nPollinating London Together is a pan livery group founded by the Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers and the Worshipful Company of Gardeners\, born out of a need to raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity and the decline in insect species\, specifically pollinators. Compared to other threatened species\, insects and pollinators are much less visible. The decline is largely due to habitat loss\, the overuse of chemicals\, and climate change. Not only will humans feel the loss of insects\, but so will birds and other animals in the food chain\, as they will not be able to feed on such insects or the fruit that they enable. \nTo address this decline\, PLT aims to help champion and create pollinator-friendly green spaces\, starting in the City of London\, allowing all pollinators\, including solitary bees\, bumblebees\, hoverflies\, butterflies\, moths and beetles\, to thrive and for workers and visitors of the City to benefit from the tranquillity of those green spaces. \nThis lecture will provide a summary of the findings from the pollinator and planting assessments in the City of London\, the development of pollinator-friendly planting and the identification of green corridors in the City. It will review the progress and future plans. \n\nSpeakers: \nDr Heather Barrett-Mold OBE is Vice Chair of the Pollinating London Together Charity\, a Past Master of the Gardeners Livery Company\, and founder member of the Livery Climate Action Group. \nHeather is a Chartered Scientist\, Chartered Horticulturist\, and Chartered Environmentalist. Currently a consultant. She was Principal/CEO of Pershore Group of Colleges\, and now Vice Chair of Governors at Capel Manor College. She was a member of the Government Advisory Panel on Sustainable Development Education for its lifetime of 5 years\, and then Advisor on the Secretary of State Sounding Board. Heather was an expert with the Commission for Sustainable London 2012\, and Secretary of State Board member for the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. She is a Fellow of the Linnaean Society\, Vice President of the Institution of Environmental Science\, Past President of the Institute of Horticulture\, and previous Chair of the Science Council. \n\nDr Konstantinos Tsiolis is a pollinator ecologist. He has recently finished his PhD at the University of Reading\, which focused on understanding the nesting preferences of ground-nesting bees in commercial fruit orchards. Since the spring of 2022\, he has been working for Pollinating London Together\, assessing the pollinator and pollinator-friendly planting diversity of the City of London and adjacent areas. He has also been in close contact with the City of London Corporation\, schools and local wildlife groups\, spreading awareness of pollinator needs and diversity.

SUMMARY:WCIT Hybrid Event - "Towards a circular economy in the IT industry"
DESCRIPTION:Join the IT & Climate Change Group at this Hybrid event for an insight into how the IT industry is transitioning from a linear take-make-throw process to a more circular economy that mitigates its impact on the environment and the climate. \nElectronic waste (or e-waste) is the fastest-growing waste stream in the world\, and the UK generates the second-highest amount of e-waste per capita in the world\, at 23.9 kg/person. e-waste contains precious metals and rare earth materials that can be recovered and fed back into the supply chain. However\, many IT assets are now being remanufactured and repurposed for extended life\, providing a valuable source of lower-cost computing for SMEs\, nonprofits\, and charities. \nHow many old technology items like mobile devices\, laptops\, and accessories do you have lying around unused in drawers? \nRegister here

SUMMARY:William Wright Lecture 2023 Lighting and the Circular Economy – presented by Jeff Shaw
DESCRIPTION:The circular economy as it relates to lighting is focused on managing materials and how they are used\, assembled and dismantled within the product design process; just as important are the lighting design decisions that are made to define how lighting products are used within the built environment. \nLighting designers have an influence in both these areas as the specifiers and designers of lighting projects and installations. The adoption of circular economy principles will allow lighting designers to change the way lighting systems are designed\, manufactured\, procured\, operated\,\nand returned. It needs a truly holistic approach to design that considers the lighting aesthetic and quality\, material impact of lighting systems\, energy efficiency\, financing\, optimal maintenance\, and the reuse or recycle mechanism. \nThe lecture will outline five principles identified to support a shift towards ‘circular lighting’ and discuss how we in the Lighting industry can contribute to the transformation of how lighting is manufactured and used within the built environment. \nSpeaker details: \nJeff is a lighting designer with over 25 years’ experience and an Associate Director within Arup’s lighting practice. A Past President and Fellow of the Society of Light & Lighting which is part of Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)\, Jeff has extensive experience working in multi-disciplinary teams on a wide range of building projects in the UK and overseas. Past projects include developing the lighting concept for the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games\, the lighting design for the Tate Modern\, both the original building and its 2016 extension\, and recently developing a new lighting masterplan for Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront district. Jeff plays an active role in promoting lighting design within the firm\, in educating young designers and engineers in lighting\, in driving cutting-edged lighting-related research and in marketing the business externally. \nEvent details: \nTuesday 6th June\, 6.00-8.00pm\nARUP\, 80 Charlotte Street\, London\, W1T 4QS \nTo book your place: please fill out this form: William Wright Lecture 2023 Booking Form

SUMMARY:Gresham College Upcoming Events
DESCRIPTION:Gresham College has been providing free public lectures since 1597 when Sir Thomas Gresham’s vision of a  college to bring the ‘new learning’ to Londoners was realised. Today we carry on Sir Thomas’s vision\, bringing some of the world’s most brilliant minds to speak in fields ranging across the arts and sciences. Gresham College has many events coming up over the next few months. Check out the lectures below. \n\nWhat is the Role of Nuclear Power in a Net Zero System?  Lecture\, Barnard’s Inn Hall\, Wednesday\, 19 Apr 2023 – 18:00\n\nThe UK’s nuclear power reactors have provided a significant proportion of the UK’s low carbon electricity over their lifetimes. Most will retire in this decade. Advances in technology mean that modern systems can compete with other forms of low carbon energy. \n  \nProfessor Myles Allen took his first degree in Physics and Philosophy\, followed by a doctorate in Atmospheric\, Oceanic and Planetary Physics\, both at the University of Oxford. He has worked at Oxford for most of his career\, with early stints at MIT and the UN Environment Programme in Kenya\, and is currently Director of the Oxford Net Zero initiative. \nProfessor Myles Allen’s Upcoming Events: \n\n\nThe Trillionth Tonne of Carbon and Why It Matters For Climate Change  Lecture\, Barnard’s Inn Hall\, Tuesday\, 18 Apr 2023 – 18:00 \n\n\nWhen we connect our model of the global carbon cycle to the model of atmosphere-ocean temperatures we find every tonne of CO2 we dump into the atmosphere ratchets up global temperatures\, permanently\, by around half a trillionth of a degree Celsius. So\, to stop global warming\, we need net zero carbon dioxide emissions. And to limit warming to 2°C\, we need to limit the total amount we emit to around 3.7 trillion tonnes of CO2: one trillion tonnes of carbon. \n\n\nHow the World Agreed on Net Zero Lecture\, Barnard’s Inn Hall\, Tuesday 23rd May 2023 – 18:00 \n\n\nThe climate had a bad year in 2009. Talks collapsed. Emails were hacked. And several papers found even 50-80% reductions weren’t enough: we had to get to net zero. Yet six years later\, negotiators from 190 countries acknowledged the need for net zero in the Paris Agreement\, even resolving to try to limit warming to 1.5 °C\, which means net zero global emissions around 2050. Can it be done? It certainly can. Will it be done? That’s up to all of us.

SUMMARY:SIMposium\, Economically competitive fusion energy event organised by Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers
DESCRIPTION:This year’s event is being opened up to a wider audience in the Livery and to those in the industry. It will be held in the SIM Hall otherwise known as Glaziers’ Hall. \nBuy a ticket here : SIMposium tickets link\nProspectus\nPower from nuclear fusion has begun to attract the attention of investors across the world.  While all nuclear-generated electricity to date has been based on fission or the “splitting of the atom”\, there is now considerable and revived interest in an alternative way of generating nuclear-based electricity\, from nuclear fusion\, which involves\, put simply\, squashing atoms together. \nThe aim of a fusion reactor is to generate extreme conditions like those found at the centre of the Sun\, which will cause hydrogen atoms continually to combine to make helium\, and release huge amounts of energy in the process\, with little radioactive waste.  While there has been progress in moving towards this goal\, continuous energy production has still not been achieved\, in spite of the significant research funding provided by many countries. \nBut new fusion enterprises are beginning to spring up\, and they are attracting billions of pounds in private investment.  Does this intriguing new phenomenon mean that we are closer than was commonly thought\, to generating economically competitive fusion energy?  The SIMposium has been organised in order to test this proposition\, and to showcase the research and financial strategies being employed to overcome the scientific and engineering obstacles that lie along the path towards commercial viability. \nSIMposium organised by the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers \nThe Master of the Scientific Instrument Makers organises the annual SIMposium\, which focuses on an important scientific topic of his or her choice\, with the added proviso that younger researchers in the fields of interest to the Company should\, ideally\, be given a chance to demonstrate their contributions. \nThis year’s SIMposium fits within the Lord Mayor’s theme of “Financing the Future”\, which the Rt Hon Lord Mayor\, Alderman Nicholas Lyons\, promulgated in his Annual Address to the Livery. \n  \nProgramme\nSIMposium\, 3 April 2023 – Economically competitive fusion energy  \n\n9.30 Arrival – coffee and biscuits\n10.00 Court Room\, Leadership Session 1. \nChaired by Professor Philip Thomas\, Master of the Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers\n10.00 Introduction: Professor Philip Thomas\n10.10 The global fusion landscape\, Tom Davis (Oxford Sigma)\n 10.35 Questions\n10.40  Introduction to fusion – UKAEA perspective\, Tim Bestwick\, Chief Technology Officer & Director Strategy\, Communications and Business Development at UK  Atomic Energy Authority\n11.05 Questions\n11.10  Coffee\n11.30  Court Room\, Leadership Session 2\nChaired by Charles Holroyd\, Deputy Master\, Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers\n11.30  Tokamak Energy – accelerating the development of commercial fusion\, David Kingham (Tokamak Energy)\n11.55  Questions\n12.00  Learning curves for fusion: prospects for increased private investment\, Alderman Professor Michael Mainelli\, Company of World Traders\n12.25 Questions\n12.30  Open challenges for measurement in fusion\, speaker from UKAEA.  \n 12.55  Questions\n13.00 Lunch\n14.00 River Room\, Scholarship Session.\n14.00 Opening of poster session\, Prof. Tom Scott (Director of SW Nuclear Hub\, University of Bristol)\n14.15 onward: 12 Posters\, primarily from younger researchers in industry and university\n16.00  Tea available\n16.30  Close

SUMMARY:Future Water Resources: A Briefing on Thames Water's Plan
DESCRIPTION:Thames Water are developing a Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP) to find ways to adapt to our changing climate\, supply water to more people as our population grows and reduce the amount of water we take from our rivers to protect the environment. Further to the launch of the plan in December 2022\, there will be a briefing at Walbrook Wharf\, 20 Cousin Lane\, Blackfriars at 2:00pm on 28 February 2023. It is anticipated that the presentation and Q&A would last for about two hours. \nAs you may be aware The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) published a report in 2018 ‘Preparing for a drier future’ which set out the significant challenges we face on water supply and the need to take action. This work prompted the first National Framework for Water Resources published by the Environment Agency in 2020 which requires water companies to collaborate to develop plans that consider their regional water needs. Five regional groups were set up and tasked with developing plans for a secure and sustainable water supply in their region\, and also that the regional plans should then fit together to provide a joined-up national solution. \nOver the past two years Thames Water has been working closely with Water Resources South East (WRSE) and the other five water companies across the SE region\, regulators\, stakeholders and customers to ensure that there is an effective regional plan for this area. The regional plan will deliver an appropriate level of drought resilience for the long term and combine demand management\, including reducing leakage\, and long term investment in water supply infrastructure. The regional plans are also crucial to support climate change resilience. WRSE published the draft SE regional plan for consultation in November 2021\, click here to read the plan and join in the consultation\, which ends on 20 February 2023. The SE regional plan has informed our draft statutory WRMP\, the website setting out our plans is available at https://thames-wrmp.co.uk where you can also respond to our consultation\, which ends on 21 March 2023. \nIf you would like to attend the proposed briefing please can you respond by email to Phil.Stride@thameswater.co.uk .

SUMMARY:Webinar : Preparing for Combustion Transition: A framework for accelerating our transition to Net Zero
DESCRIPTION:Preparing for Combustion Transition: A framework for accelerating our transition to Net Zero Webinar \nPresented by Professor Simon Spooner\, Principal Scientist\, Atkins Infrastructure. \nAbout this Webinar\nWe have grown prosperous and numerous by burning and consuming the products of biological systems of the past and present. We have now learnt how to get what we need without having to do this anymore. We just have to get on and manage the transition to embracing and stewarding our world instead of consuming it. In this talk I will set out some concepts and principles for this\, some metrics to measure with and some plans and tools to help manage the transition. Then\, as Water Conservators and Livery Companies\, what might we be able to contribute here in the City? Can we develop alternative approaches to offsetting that will be more effective? Can the City lead in changing its infrastructure to eliminate combustion in our buildings and transport and so attain net zero? \nAbout the Speaker\nProf Simon Spooner is an environmental scientist applying scientific models combined with social\, economic\, political and regulatory methods to address the challenges that we face and help build better infrastructure systems. Currently his main activities are: as a senior expert advisor on the UK\nHealth Security Agency programme to develop wastewater epidemiology based responses to the Covid-19 pandemic; applying his SimBasinQ river basin water quality model to address the impact of wastewater discharges on our rivers; and developing nature based catchment solutions to flooding\,\nwater quality\, water resources\, biodiversity and carbon sequestration. He has developed the combustion transition framework\, an innovative approach to integrating GHG emissions reductions and land-use based regeneration of natural processes with a framework of metrics and economic\ntools to facilitate an accelerated transition to net-zero. \nOver the last 30 years as a consultant with Atkins and before that Mott MacDonald he worked about half his time overseas\, mostly in China\, on major World Bank\, EU and UK government projects in urban environment development\, energy systems and environmental policy. He was Technical Director for water and environment for Atkins in China mostly delivering urban planning projects. More recently he worked in partnership with KPMG for the UK FCDO in China on the development of environmental governance processes and access to international financing for infrastructure projects under China’s Belt and Road programme. In the UK he mostly worked for water companies in wastewater and river basin management and in water industry regulatory processes. \nHe is an honorary professor at Nottingham university in Ningbo and UK campuses and a visiting professor at many universities in China as well as Cambridge University in UK. He has written and edited a number of books on water and environmental management\, regulation and adaption of European approaches to China for OECD\, FWR\, EU and Chinese publishers. What he really enjoys is building on the latest science and digital systems to innovate and find simpler integrated solutions to complex problems. \nRegister for this event here: Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Day seminar: The Future of Energy in the UK
DESCRIPTION:Deputy Master\, Kenneth Cupitt in his responsibility as a member of the Education Committee has organised an all-day seminar on the topic “The Future of Energy” at Glaziers’ Hall\, with six speakers comprising business owners and decision makers will share their views on both the provision of energy for the country and what alternative choices may be available for future opportunities. \nInformation shared by the speakers will help business leaders make the right decisions over the next decade and learn what the UK Government\, and the supply industry\, is having to put in place for economic green energy. Topics will include: \n\nNuclear Energy (both Fusion and Fission will be covered and what Rolls Royce are developing with mini reactors for regional generation);\nMaking money from Sources of Energy (Ways of Cutting the Costs of Energy in a Business\, how to store energy in times of plenty for use in times of shortages\, achieving cost cutting by enabling businesses to trade energy);\nRooftop Solar Panels and PV Modules (advantages of using Solar Energy\, reduced Electricity Bill\, Return on Investment\, Renewable Energy\, Environmentally Friendly\, Energy Independence). A photovoltaic system or solar power system is an electric power system designed to supply usable solar power by means of photovoltaics;\nAdding Hydrogen to Supplement Natural Gas (now that trials of the addition of hydrogen to gas have been completed what it will do to benefit us all);\nHydrogen as a Fuel for Delivery Vehicles (there is unlikely to be enough Lithium to power storage batteries in the short term\, but larger vehicles are also likely to be powered by hydrogen to carry the bulky items and for the driving range);\nHeat Pump Technology (the conclusion\, thus far\, is that for heat pumps\, ammonia is thermodynamically the best refrigerant in the field of operation for comfort cooling and is also safer than using Fluorocarbons).

SUMMARY:Water Conservators’ Webinar 'Preparing For A Drier Future '
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to join the Water Conservators’ January Webinar ‘ Preparing For A Drier Future ‘. \nWednesday 18th January 2023 5.30pm to 6.45pm \nPresented by Jim Hall\, Professor of Climate and Environmental Risks at the University of Oxford\, and Jon Chappell\, Senior Policy Adviser at the National Infrastructure Commission. \nAbout this Webinar\nThe National Infrastructure Commission is the government’s independent expert adviser on long term infrastructure policy. Among its advisory remit is water\, flooding and drought. In 2018 the Commission published a seminal report on the latter\, which has informed water sector plans and government planning assumptions ever since. Preparing for a Drier Future called for that additional water supply and demand reduction totalling 4\,000Ml/day to be delivered by 2050 to ensure England avoids severe drought. This webinar will set out the triple track approach recommended by the Commission: addressing system leakages\, investing in new supply and transfer infrastructure and reducing consumption. Commission representatives will offer an update on progress towards their proposed solutions and touch on future plans for reports on water related topics. \nRegister to the free event here
