He has received prestigious awards for improving yields whilst reducing environmental impact\, He has also been recognised for his work promoting the understanding of food\, farming and the countryside in Norfolk. Poul is currently Director of Farming at a different estate\, Holkham Estate\, and is Chairman of Catalyst Farming\, a data management company set up in 2019 to share knowledge across four progressive farming companies in Norfolk. He is an Honorary Fellow of the National Institute for Agricultural Botany\, a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Farmers\, and will be Vice President of the Royal Norfolk Show in 2024 and President in 2025. \nSarah Calcutt is CEO of City Harvest\, London’s leading food charity. Sarah is a 5th generation fruit farmer and has previously grown and marketed fruit. A Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers\, she is also a Non-Exec Director of The Covent Garden Market Authority\, a founding Non-Exec Director of Outfield Technologies and serves as a Commissioner on the new government Commission into the future of food banks. \nJane Anderson CBE is a consultant physician and researcher\, studied human nutrition\, gaining her PhD\, and qualifying as a dietician prior to retraining in medicine. During her year as Master of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries she successfully introduced plant-led menus to Society functions. Jane is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners and is an advocate for the “One Health” concept\, recognising the health of people\, animals and plants is inextricably connected to the health of our shared environment. Jane is Chair of the charity Paintings in Hospitals and of the National AIDS Trust.

DESCRIPTION:Dr Mike Bluck\nDirector\, Centre for Nuclear Engineering\, Imperial College\nTuesday 28 May 2024\nNational Liberal Club\, 1 Whitehall Place\, London SW1A 2HE \nFuellers Advantage – A series of technical meetings\, held jointly by the Worshipful Company of Fuellers with the Science Circle of the National Liberal Club \nSUMMARY OF PRESENTATION\nThere is renewed global interest in nuclear power\, particularly as a result of energy security concerns arising as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are thought by many to be the answer to the challenges in the deployment of nuclear power. If successful they could play a key role in decarbonisation\, providing reliable low-carbon electricity and heat\, in support of intermittent renewables. There are more than 50 designs globally\, but all remain just that – designs. What are they\, when will we see them\, and will they be able to solve the nuclear industry’s problems? The UK has shortlisted six SMR designs\, and a competition is underway. In this talk I will summarise the technologies\, explain what ‘modular’ really means and what is needed from Government\, industry and finance to realise this potential?

SUMMARY:How Pollinator-Friendly is the City of London?
DESCRIPTION:Background: \nPollinating London Together is a pan livery group founded by the Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers and the Worshipful Company of Gardeners\, born out of a need to raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity and the decline in insect species\, specifically pollinators. Compared to other threatened species\, insects and pollinators are much less visible. The decline is largely due to habitat loss\, the overuse of chemicals\, and climate change. Not only will humans feel the loss of insects\, but so will birds and other animals in the food chain\, as they will not be able to feed on such insects or the fruit that they enable. \nTo address this decline\, PLT aims to help champion and create pollinator-friendly green spaces\, starting in the City of London\, allowing all pollinators\, including solitary bees\, bumblebees\, hoverflies\, butterflies\, moths and beetles\, to thrive and for workers and visitors of the City to benefit from the tranquillity of those green spaces. \nThis lecture will provide a summary of the findings from the pollinator and planting assessments in the City of London\, the development of pollinator-friendly planting and the identification of green corridors in the City. It will review the progress and future plans. \n\nSpeakers: \nDr Heather Barrett-Mold OBE is Vice Chair of the Pollinating London Together Charity\, a Past Master of the Gardeners Livery Company\, and founder member of the Livery Climate Action Group. \nHeather is a Chartered Scientist\, Chartered Horticulturist\, and Chartered Environmentalist. Currently a consultant. She was Principal/CEO of Pershore Group of Colleges\, and now Vice Chair of Governors at Capel Manor College. She was a member of the Government Advisory Panel on Sustainable Development Education for its lifetime of 5 years\, and then Advisor on the Secretary of State Sounding Board. Heather was an expert with the Commission for Sustainable London 2012\, and Secretary of State Board member for the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. She is a Fellow of the Linnaean Society\, Vice President of the Institution of Environmental Science\, Past President of the Institute of Horticulture\, and previous Chair of the Science Council. \n\nDr Konstantinos Tsiolis is a pollinator ecologist. He has recently finished his PhD at the University of Reading\, which focused on understanding the nesting preferences of ground-nesting bees in commercial fruit orchards. Since the spring of 2022\, he has been working for Pollinating London Together\, assessing the pollinator and pollinator-friendly planting diversity of the City of London and adjacent areas. He has also been in close contact with the City of London Corporation\, schools and local wildlife groups\, spreading awareness of pollinator needs and diversity.

DESCRIPTION:We need to decarbonise technologies and supply chains to deliver social value and move towards our net-zero commitment. The opportunity to reach net-zero by 2050 is here\, but that needs multi-sector collaboration and targeted solutions. This cross-livery event will bring Constructors and Information Technologists (IT) together to debate technological interdependencies between the sectors\, role of repair/refurbishments\, sustainable choices on materials and IT solutions. The keynotes will provide good account of the current industry practice and challenges faced in the supply chain. A debate/Q&A will allow attendees to raise questions to the experts and explore possible cross-sector solutions. \nKeynote Speakers\nTony Smith – Sika\nTony is the Head of Product Management for Concrete and Waterproofing\, which includes concrete admixtures\, fibres and waterproofing products such as membranes and coatings. He worked for a national aggregate and Readymix firm for 9 years in a variety of concrete technical and specification roles before joining Sika in 2015. He worked in Area Sales\, Specification and Business Development roles before joining the Product team. He is now responsible for the introduction of new products and technical / legal compliance of the product range. \nTony sits on the Cement Admixtures Association committee and various industry bodies such as the British Precast Concrete Federation. He is also a Certified Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing and has worked with design teams to create practical and effective waterproofing schemes. \nIsmail Hussein – Slabtec\nIsmail from Slabtec is a Civil/ Structural engineer who has held various Technical and Business Development roles within the refurbishment\, concrete repair\, structural strengthening\, waterproofing\, groundworks and temporary works industries. His role focuses on working with engineers\, contractors and clients to provide solutions for the refurbishment of existing structures. \nSlabtec is a refurbishment contractor specialising in concrete repair and the design + installation of innovative and optimised structural strengthening solutions. \nRussell Macdonald – Hewlett Packard Enterprise \nRussell Macdonald is Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Chief Technologist for Hybrid Solutions; developing thought leadership and strategies for hybrid cloud\, data first modernisation and IT sustainability. SUMMARY:William Wright Lecture 2023 Lighting and the Circular Economy – presented by Jeff Shaw
DESCRIPTION:The circular economy as it relates to lighting is focused on managing materials and how they are used\, assembled and dismantled within the product design process; just as important are the lighting design decisions that are made to define how lighting products are used within the built environment. \nLighting designers have an influence in both these areas as the specifiers and designers of lighting projects and installations. The adoption of circular economy principles will allow lighting designers to change the way lighting systems are designed\, manufactured\, procured\, operated\,\nand returned. It needs a truly holistic approach to design that considers the lighting aesthetic and quality\, material impact of lighting systems\, energy efficiency\, financing\, optimal maintenance\, and the reuse or recycle mechanism. \nThe lecture will outline five principles identified to support a shift towards ‘circular lighting’ and discuss how we in the Lighting industry can contribute to the transformation of how lighting is manufactured and used within the built environment. \nSpeaker details: \nJeff is a lighting designer with over 25 years’ experience and an Associate Director within Arup’s lighting practice. A Past President and Fellow of the Society of Light & Lighting which is part of Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)\, Jeff has extensive experience working in multi-disciplinary teams on a wide range of building projects in the UK and overseas. Past projects include developing the lighting concept for the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games\, the lighting design for the Tate Modern\, both the original building and its 2016 extension\, and recently developing a new lighting masterplan for Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront district. His specialism is renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs) and he advised on the City of London PPA  signed in late 2020. \nGraeme Low\, Assistant Director – Head of Energy and Sustainability\, City of London Corporation – Graeme leads the Energy and Sustainability Team within the City Surveyors Department. Before focusing his career onto the fight against climate change\, he led R&D teams within data science-based fintech startups\, culminating with the co-founding of Sybenetix\, successfully acquired by Nasdaq in 2017. \nOsas Omoigiade \nOsas is the founder and CEO of Deep.Meta\, who are bringing advanced technology to reuse steel and save millions of tonnes of CO2. He has a PhD in Steel Metallurgy from Imperial College London and strong relationships with steel makers in the UK. Deep.Meta is backed by Imperial Enterprise Labs Centre for Climate Change and Innovation\, Google\, Innovate UK as well as Climate Tech and Automation investors. \nLt.Gen Richard Nugee \nRichard created the MOD’s Net Zero Strategy and is board member of multiple climate start-ups and a member of Climate VC’s impact advisory board. Richard was commissioned into the British Army in 1986 and completed numerous operational tours. He was latterly Chief of Defence People and in 2020 wrote a Review of Defence’s approach to Climate Change and Sustainability. Most will retire in this decade. Advances in technology mean that modern systems can compete with other forms of low carbon energy. \n  \nProfessor Myles Allen took his first degree in Physics and Philosophy\, followed by a doctorate in Atmospheric\, Oceanic and Planetary Physics\, both at the University of Oxford. He has worked at Oxford for most of his career\, with early stints at MIT and the UN Environment Programme in Kenya\, and is currently Director of the Oxford Net Zero initiative. \nProfessor Myles Allen’s Upcoming Events: \n\n\nThe Trillionth Tonne of Carbon and Why It Matters For Climate Change  Lecture\, Barnard’s Inn Hall\, Tuesday\, 18 Apr 2023 – 18:00 \n\n\nWhen we connect our model of the global carbon cycle to the model of atmosphere-ocean temperatures we find every tonne of CO2 we dump into the atmosphere ratchets up global temperatures\, permanently\, by around half a trillionth of a degree Celsius. So\, to stop global warming\, we need net zero carbon dioxide emissions. And to limit warming to 2°C\, we need to limit the total amount we emit to around 3.7 trillion tonnes of CO2: one trillion tonnes of carbon. \n\n\nHow the World Agreed on Net Zero Lecture\, Barnard’s Inn Hall\, Tuesday 23rd May 2023 – 18:00 \n\n\nThe climate had a bad year in 2009. Talks collapsed. Emails were hacked. And several papers found even 50-80% reductions weren’t enough: we had to get to net zero. Yet six years later\, negotiators from 190 countries acknowledged the need for net zero in the Paris Agreement\, even resolving to try to limit warming to 1.5 °C\, which means net zero global emissions around 2050. Can it be done? It certainly can. Will it be done? That’s up to all of us.

SUMMARY:Future Water Resources: A Briefing on Thames Water's Plan
DESCRIPTION:Thames Water are developing a Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP) to find ways to adapt to our changing climate\, supply water to more people as our population grows and reduce the amount of water we take from our rivers to protect the environment. Further to the launch of the plan in December 2022\, there will be a briefing at Walbrook Wharf\, 20 Cousin Lane\, Blackfriars at 2:00pm on 28 February 2023. It is anticipated that the presentation and Q&A would last for about two hours. \nAs you may be aware The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) published a report in 2018 ‘Preparing for a drier future’ which set out the significant challenges we face on water supply and the need to take action. This work prompted the first National Framework for Water Resources published by the Environment Agency in 2020 which requires water companies to collaborate to develop plans that consider their regional water needs. Five regional groups were set up and tasked with developing plans for a secure and sustainable water supply in their region\, and also that the regional plans should then fit together to provide a joined-up national solution. \nOver the past two years Thames Water has been working closely with Water Resources South East (WRSE) and the other five water companies across the SE region\, regulators\, stakeholders and customers to ensure that there is an effective regional plan for this area. The regional plan will deliver an appropriate level of drought resilience for the long term and combine demand management\, including reducing leakage\, and long term investment in water supply infrastructure. The regional plans are also crucial to support climate change resilience. WRSE published the draft SE regional plan for consultation in November 2021\, click here to read the plan and join in the consultation\, which ends on 20 February 2023.
