SUMMARY:William Wright Lecture 2023 Lighting and the Circular Economy – presented by Jeff Shaw
DESCRIPTION:The circular economy as it relates to lighting is focused on managing materials and how they are used\, assembled and dismantled within the product design process; just as important are the lighting design decisions that are made to define how lighting products are used within the built environment. \nLighting designers have an influence in both these areas as the specifiers and designers of lighting projects and installations. The adoption of circular economy principles will allow lighting designers to change the way lighting systems are designed\, manufactured\, procured\, operated\,\nand returned. It needs a truly holistic approach to design that considers the lighting aesthetic and quality\, material impact of lighting systems\, energy efficiency\, financing\, optimal maintenance\, and the reuse or recycle mechanism. \nThe lecture will outline five principles identified to support a shift towards ‘circular lighting’ and discuss how we in the Lighting industry can contribute to the transformation of how lighting is manufactured and used within the built environment. \nSpeaker details: \nJeff is a lighting designer with over 25 years’ experience and an Associate Director within Arup’s lighting practice. A Past President and Fellow of the Society of Light & Lighting which is part of Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)\, Jeff has extensive experience working in multi-disciplinary teams on a wide range of building projects in the UK and overseas. Past projects include developing the lighting concept for the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games\, the lighting design for the Tate Modern\, both the original building and its 2016 extension\, and recently developing a new lighting masterplan for Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront district.
